Often times we overlook things because they may sound good or because it may be humorous. Often times we accept something less than desirable because it made us laugh. Often times we agree with unintelligent comments because our friends are the ones speaking them. Often times we say things without thinking clearly. Often times we listen to jokes and music that will change our hearts for the worse. Often times we get caught up in the gossip of life. Often times we hurt others feelings and damage relationships because we can’t see past our own nose. Often times we blame others for our own lack of self-control. Often times we make unwise decisions for self gain. Often times we befriend the bad influences in our life because they seem cool. Often times we lose sight of our purpose here on earth. Often times we become so busy that we fail to greet our Lord each morning. Often times we place God on the need to know basis because we place our earthly best friends before him. Often times we neglect our need for his control over our life. Often times we don’t give thanks or even see the blessings he has bestowed on us. Often times we stay silent and refrain from becoming involved because we are afraid of others finding out how much we still need to learn. Often times we agree with a statement even when the cursing could have been left out. Often times we fail to realize that God sees and knows all.
19 This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence 20 whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.
1 John 3:20
You see, whether you’re in the work place with your co-workers, with family members or just chillin’ with your friends, unnecessary conversations arise and gossip is spread. Any time a moment like this arises, we must make the choice to stay and join or to walk away and guard our tongue.
The choice is really a reflection of our heart...of who we are. You may agree but didn't make the statement...it is still a reflection of the Junk you allow in that is being poured out.
8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. 9Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you. Philippians 4:8-9
We have all heard the expression when you put junk in, you’re going to see junk come out.
If you are filling yourself up with all the “junk” in this world, do you really expect to see Jesus within’ your life?
Jennifer states, “I can hang out with whoever I want, no one can influence me!” later her co-workers were gossiping at her work station, they were talking about another co-worker and made a joke about her…Jennifer innocently chuckled at the joke. Coming around the corner was Melissa, the one they had made a joke of…Melissa was a close friend of Jennifer’s. They didn’t know that Melissa overheard their conversation.
Now Jennifer may not have said anything, but her chuckle did. Later that day she had asked Melissa if she would like to join her for dinner and a movie. To Jennifer’s surprise, Melissa declined.
Jennifer was puzzled! “Melissa has never said no to me before”, she had thought to herself. The end of the work day came and Jennifer had noticed that Melissa had avoided her all afternoon. Jennifer didn’t understand why.
Save me, O LORD, from lying lips and from deceitful tongues. Psalm 120:2
A man who lacks judgment derides his neighbor, but a man of understanding holds his tongue. Proverbs 11:12
You see, Jennifer was influenced without even knowing it. Her innocent chuckle caused her friend to re-evaluate their friendship.
The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit. Proverbs 15:4
Had Jennifer asked her co-workers to stop, or had she walked away, she, without saying anything to Melissa, would have shown her loyalty and compassion within their friendship.
He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity. Proverbs 21:23
The scenarios can go on and on and on.
When was the last time you were in a situation like this? What was your response? Were you like Jennifer? Did you stay and not necessarily participate but laugh or even nod your head and agree?
Or have you ever been a Melissa? What did you do? Did you react in a loving manner? Or did you become so hurt and upset that you lost your self-control?
5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. 8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. James 3: 5-6;8-10 KJV
When are you going to decide to rise above and make the changes necessary in your life to guard your tongue?
Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies. Psalm 34:13
My friend, pray, pray and ask for forgiveness, ask God to give you courage and wisdom to make these changes in your life.
